Email Article How can you separate the text from the images in a graphic novel?
Mariko and Jillian Tamaki's graphic novel debutSkim is among the books nominated in the English-language children's literature category (Governor General's Literary Awards in Canada). Brown and Seth are protesting that only Mariko Tamaki is cited in the official nomination.
The acclaimed work, which explores life at an all-girls private school in Toronto, is a collaboration between the two cousins, with words by Mariko and artwork by Jillian.
Mariko, age 29, says "There's a difference between telling a story just to tell a story and telling a story because you enjoy the craft," she says. "Writing is not just telling people what's happened in your life, but showing how you worked through it."
